Kathmandu, Nepal – Climate for Life Campaign Ambassadors, Apa Sherpa and Dawa Steven Sherpa shared their stories on Climate Change in the Himalayas at different European cities in their bid to raise the profile of the Himalayas and taking the issue to the UN Climate Talks in Copenhagen.
At Prague, Apa and Dawa were speakers at the Festival Alpinismu Setkani 2009 where more than 3000 mountaineers and mountain-enthusiasts were participating including veteran mountaineers like Reinhold Messner and the Mayor of Prague who is also an Everest Summiteer. They talked about their experience of seeing the changes in the Himalayan landscape while climbing mountains and appealed to their fellow alpinists to join hands with the Himalayan people to raise awareness about this issue.

Renowned mountaineer Reinhold Messner said, "I have witnessed some rapid changes in the Himalayas during my years of climbing experience." He added that the old routes used during expeditions were unrecognizable in recent years and old feats performed by mountaineers were difficult to repeat by younger generation due to the change in the mountain terrain like melting of snow and ice.

Apa and Dawa got a standing ovation from the crowd who applauded the tireless work done by these two individuals to raise awareness on Climate Change in the Himalayas. The duo also extended an open invitation to the participants to join Nepal at the Summiteers' Summit to be held in Copenhagen on 11 December.

The Summiteers’ Summit programme will be organized on the occasion of the International Mountain Day and will be joined by dignitaries from Nepal, WWF Climate Ambassadors and supporters who will march in the streets of Copenhagen to raise awareness about the Himalayan climate change.

From Kathmandu, the Minister for Forest and Soil Conservation Mr. Deepak Bohara appealed, “I urge all summiteers and mountain lovers from Europe to join us at the Summiteers’ Summit in Copenhagen on 11 December 2009 and help raise our voice to save the Himalayas.”

In Bratislava, Apa and Dawa attended an exhibition on the Himalayas involving the Mayors of both Prague and Bratislava.

In London, at a programme ‘The Here and Now of Climate Change in the Himalayas’ jointly organized by WWF-UK and Embassy of Nepal, Dawa made a presentation on Climate Change in the Himalayas before an audience including Members of Parliament, senior civil servants and other parties.

Continuing their European Expedition Apa and Dawa will be travelling next to Rome, Geneva, Chamonix, Vienna, Brussels and finally to Copenhagen.

The European Expedition is part of the Climate-for-Life Campaign spearheaded by WWF Nepal.

“We are delighted that our Campaign Ambassadors are succeeding in raising the profile of the Himalayas in the global climate debate,” said Prashant Singh, the Campaign Lead.
