The WWF led Climate-For-Life Campaign succeeded, however, to raise awareness and increase the profile of the Himalayas in the Global Climate Debate.
Kathmandu, Nepal – Despite rhetoric from top political leaders of the world, hectic parleys of the negotiators, public demonstrations world wide and wider interest generated by the media the world over, Copenhagen Cop-15 Conference has failed to live up to the expectations associated with it by the poor and vulnerable populations of the world. WWF Nepal, and indeed the whole of Nepal stands disappointed of this dismal show of commitment of the world leaders.
Hopes are now pinned on the COP 16 Meeting at Mexico City the next year for a concrete and decisive outcome that could address the growing dangers of moving towards irreversible climate change.
Anil Manandhar, Country Representative, WWF Nepal said, “It is highly disappointing that countries that are responsible for Climate Change are not taking corrective measures even at this late stage”.
Despite a near failure of Copenhagen talks WWF led Climate-for-Life Campaign met with tremendous success since its beginning in April of 2009 to bring about massive awareness in Nepal about “Climate Change” and its impacts on the lives and livelihoods of Nepali populace. In recent times, US President Barack Obama, Former US Vice President Al Gore and several leaders of the world are heard talking about impacts of Climate Change in the Himalayas, and its likely implications on hundreds of millions people living downstream.
Campaign Ambassadors Amrita Thapa Magar, Anil Chitrakar, Apa Sherpa, Dawa Steven Sherpa, Gagan Thapa and Nirvana Chaudhary made tremendous personal efforts to take the message of the campaign to Nepali masses as well as to the global leaders.
Launching the campaign in a spectacular way, Apa Sherpa, the ace mountaineer took a message for the world “Stop Climate Change. Let the Himalayas Live” on top of Mount Everest on 21st May, 2009. He brought few pieces of Rock from top of Mount Everest that was given to several heads of states of the industrialized countries as a symbol of melting Himalayas. This included handing over the Everest Rock to US President Barack Obama and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown by Nepal’s Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal this September. Later similar rock pieces were handed over on behalf of Prime Minister of Nepal to France’s President Nicolas Sarkozy and Austrian President Heinz Fischer.
Another promising mountaineer, Dawa Steven Sherpa became possibly the most active Himalayan climate campaigner in the world. During the campaign period he spoke to hundreds of national and international media agencies including the likes of NHK, Guardian, CNN, BBC, Time about the impacts of climate change on the mountain communities and people living down stream. Both Apa and Dawa were commended by WWF International by offering them the highest individual honors “Leaders for a Living Planet”
Gagan Thapa and Amrita Thapa Magar relentlessly talked about Climate Change in their political constituencies and beyond at every possible national and international fora. Nirvana Chaudhary took similar actions to take the message to Nepal’s business sector. Anil Chitrakar played a prominent role in developing all important partnerships for the campaign. He played a critical and pivotal role in making Kathmandu to Copenhagen Climate conference a success.
Campaign Lead Prashant Singh, and Dawa Sherpa spoke at the European Parliament in Brussels this month highlighting the threats in the Everest Region due to Climate Change. Several EU MPs showed keen interest in helping Nepal out.
The campaign ambassadors Apa and Dawa travelled across ten prominent cities in Europe raising the campaign messages in an effective way everywhere as part of their European Expedition (20 Nov to 13 Dec) drawing world wide media attention in favor of the Himalayas and its people.
Climate For life campaign hosted an event at Copenhagen on 11th December to highlight the outcomes of Kathmandu to Copenhagen Conference. Minister of Environment Thakur Prasad Sharma and WWF Denmark CEO, Geete Seeburg were among some of the prominent speakers on the occasions. Several Ministers from Nepal including Minister of Finance Surendra Pandey, Minister of Forest and Soil Conservation Deepak Bohara, Minister of Tourism Sharat Singh Bhandari and Minister for Culture Minendra Rijal attended the event also participated by many prominent international guests.
The campaign team and the ambassadors actively participated at the “Summiteers’ Summit” lead by Ministry of Forest and Soil Conservation and NTNC on 12th December, 2009. Campaign Ambassadors Apa Sherpa and Dawa Sherpa were prominent speakers at the plenary. Some seven hundred people participated in the march to save the Himalayas despite sub-zero temperature.
Campaign thanks all its partner agencies for their kind support and offers special sense of gratitude towards the Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Forest and Soil Conservation to take leadership in assertively raising Climate Change issues at world stage during the campaign period.
Climate For Life Campaign’s first phase comes to an end this December.
