Two WWF Ambassadors Aim for Everest Summit – To Highlight Climate Change in the Himalayas
In May 2009, Climate Ambassador Apa Sherpa made history by sending out a grave climate change message from the top of the world during his 19th record-breaking summit of Everest. Following this event, the WWF-led Climate for Life Campaign reached out to a large mass of people in Nepal and beyond with a compelling voice for global action with powerful events, highlighting the impacts of Climate Change in the fragile Himalayan eco-system.
This year, Apa is back in Everest. And this time, he is joined by a voice from the developed world - 42-year-old Carina Raiha, a former Finnish businesswoman with a passion for nature and conservation.
With the highest mountain in the world as their platform, Apa and Carina have their individual records to make. Apa for his 20th Everest ascent and Carina as the first Finnish woman to summit Everest.
But they have one more thing in common. Both Apa and Carina are dedicated to raising their voice for the Himalayan cause. Together they will join hands with Climate for Life, and during their expedition, will work towards highlighting this message – Climate Change in the Himalayas is a REALITY. And we need the world’s support for this cause.
Apa, as a veteran climber and a voice from the Sherpa community, has been an icon for the Himalayan Climate Change cause. Carina, as a citizen from the developed world, which largely is responsible for climate change, will add to this voice, showcasing that only with united voice and actions, can we win the fight against Climate Change.
Throughout the Expedition, the Ambassadors will be sending us photos and updates of their latest activities and observations in the Himalayas.
